Anti-tnfs and Eczema flares Options

Hi,

Has anyone else experienced a serious flare of eczema/dermatitis after being on an anti-tnf for a few weeks or months? Last year I was prescribed Certolizumab pegol - got on brilliantly, felt great but I suspected it caused a flare of my atopic (heridary) eczema; stopped this therapy. My rheumatologist started me on Etanercept later last year, same outcome. Looking at medical literature on line there are records of this and I think it was first noticed in 2005. Anyone on an anti-tnf who has a history of eczema and it hasn't flared up?? Smile

Hi Jim, I have lately developed a skin condition after being on abatercept since April.
It has been present for some time, but has become worse over the last couple of months very itchy and sore. I have always had very dry skin and had eczema as a child. Like you,it is in the family.
I recently asked my G.P. about it and she gave me emolient creams and said it could be drug related or just from the ra.
Did your condition improve between the 2 biologic treatments?
I have not yet mentioned it to my team to see what they think, but know that quite a few folk on here have eczema type conditions with ra.
Abatercept has made so much difference to my inflamation that I do not want to come off it unless I really have to.

Hi Zena,

Thanks! Sounds very familiar. Yes, my eczema reduced a lot between the two anti-tnfs; I probably should have left a longer break but keen to try another, consultant wasn't convinced it was due to the Certolizumab anyway. Since writing I have now been off the etanercept for two weeks and i'm already noticing a big improvement, healing up well. now I'm really convinced its the cause. Will see consultant on 31st Jan, will discuss and let you know what they say. Sarah from NRAS helpline confirms its a known problematic side effect. I'm going to see how long i can manage on just a DMARD - leflunomide. Best wishes. Jim

Hi Jim,
I was due to have my abatercept infusion last Monday, so thought I'd better explain the skin thing to my nurse first. I also have a sun damage wart that has just occurred for which I have cream, so mentioned that too.
She rang back, said not to go for my infusion and they are sending me a quick app to see my rheumy doc. in the post.
Will just have to wait and see.
